Orchid Types

There are over 25,000 types of orchids and, indeed, the family Orchidaceae is the largest in the world of plants! These beautiful plants have been in more than 100 million years and plants can vary from microscopic up to several meters high. The flowers have a distinctive appearance with 3 inner petals surrounded by 3 outer petals and the petal of a cup shape that is different from others. Some even resemble orchids from other creatures, as bees, butterflies and lizards!

Although we think of orchids as a tropical flower that can actually grow in most climates. They can grow in soil or in trees and rocks. Orchids are classified according to their water needs. Paphiopedilum, Cymbidium and Odontoglossum need a humid environment throughout the year. Cattelya, Oncidium and Dendrobium only need water when in active growth and Vanda Ascocend really do not need water at all.

Cymbidium orchids are some of the most popular with 40 species and thousands of hybrids. This is one of the oldest cultivated orchids and can grow in the ground, in trees or rocks. Can be found growing naturally in Japan, China, Southeast Asia and Australia. This is one of the easiest orchids for beginners and each flowers year, if used correctly.

Perhaps the most exotic of all is the Cattleya orchids coming from South America. These are the orchids more typically chosen to arrange this, however, have been collected and many of these types of orchids are endangered.

The second kind are Denrobiums largest orchid and has over a thousand species. These flowers can be found in northern India, Southeast Asia, Australia and Polynesia. They tend to grow near Ecuador's tropical conditions, although some grow in climates with dry winters. While these are easy to grow, it is quite difficult to get it blooms regularly.

Phalaenopsis orchids have flowers are long lasting and fairly easy to grow. These flowers are a favorite at weddings and can be colored in shades of pink, yellow stripes. These are native to the Philippines and is fast becoming a popular House Plant.

Vanda Orchids are another plant that is quite easy to grow. These plants produce flowers in vibrant colors like blue, red, and orange yeloow. Flower Spikes can be up to 10 flowers that last for several weeks.

Orchids are a bit fussy to grow, but these delicate plants will reward you with a gentle fragrance and the beautiful different flowers. When the orchids grow at home, you need to remember to give them enough light, enough water and adequate temperature and fertilization. Orchids must be replanted every 2 to 3 years.
