caladiums plant in Kansas now ??????????
recelntly live in Kansas and bought some Caladium Bulbs (tubers) for our garden. The package says to plant in our area in March / April. We can plant now for next year or to get a late start this season or only pretty useless at this point in the season ..?????????
Caladium bulbs should be planted in March / April, but it takes the soil get Very Hot to push up, so you should be fine now sowing. They are not Winter Hardy in the climate of Kansas and must be dug to save for next spring. These bulbs are easy to maintain. The elimination of tender bulbs can begin after a frost. Freezing damage to the foliage, but underground root is protected in the soil warmer. Start by cutting the foliage Browning back to earth and discards. Once removed, dig bulbs and tubers. Remove as much soil as possible with your hand. If desired, wash the rest of the land away or just leave it connected. Before storage, the bulbs should be dried or cured of one to two weeks. This can be done in a warm, dry, like a garage. The drying process removes excess moisture from the plants, which can lead to decay. Once have been cured can be stored. Most are best kept at temperatures around 45-50 degrees. Basements are by far the most common storage location. Store dried plants either in a cardboard box, or less compact in the newspaper or dry peat moss. Check the storage container a few times during the winter and discard rotting tubers. Replant each year in late March to mid April. I hope this was not too much information! Good luck!
